Senior living and long term care
Decisions on senior living and long term care for the elderly must be made with the utmost care and deliberation. The deliberation must take into consideration the level of care that is required, the degree of independence the senior enjoys and/or will like to maintain, men or women health and nutritional needs, and the cost of the desired services and facilities.
If a senior can no longer live on his or her own, there are two major long term care facilities that can be considered. One is an Assisted Living Facility(ALF) and the other is an Adult Family Care Home(AFCH).
What is an Adult Family Care Home (AFCH)?
Adult family care homes (AFCHs) are private residences that are licensed to provide senior living, housing, meals, and personal care services to elder persons and disabled adults who are unable to live independently. Adult family care homes are part of the Assisted Living Programm.
However, unlike Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs), Adult family care homes (AFCHs) are owned and operated by licensed AFCH “providers” who live with the residents they serve. In addition, AFCHs are limited to a maximum of five (5) residents, thus providing a more homely, personal, and less disruptive long term care environment for the elder.
AFCHs are also intended to provide senior living with a less costly alternative to more restrictive, institutional settings for individuals who do not need 24-hour nursing supervision.

Who May Reside In an Adult Family Care Home in Florida?
Seniors living in an adult family care home are required to meet the AFCH residency criteria, which is defined by Florida regulations and by the provider’s admission policy. In most cases, AFCHs provide long term care, healthy and nutritional meals, general supervision, assistance with personal care services, and assistance with medications to elders and disabled adults who require such services.
What Are the Costs?
While senior living in AFCHs generally cost less than other residential care facilities, the cost of an AFCH can vary based on the location, residential unit size, amenities, and services provided by the AFCH. Although most seniors living in AFCHs pay privately, there are programs designed to assist with AFCH residency for persons who qualify.
