Pregnancy Complications

Pregnancy Complications

Pregnancy is a unique time in any woman’s life and also in the life of her family. There is so much to think about when she is having a baby - health, nutrition, weight gain, depression, planning, and high risk pregnancies concerns are just a few.

Added to those are hormonal imbalances which can sometime cause uneasy situations. Mood swings, for instant, are common and it requires an understanding partner and family to get through it.

It’s also very common for a pregnant woman to feel stressed. The huge weight gains and the feeling of unattractiveness, lack of sleep and other issues can contribute to a state of crankiness.

However, these are all part of the territory of pregnancy. There is nothing usually about any of those. Those are not pregnancy complications, and with proper diet and exercise, the term of pregnancy should be just fine.

However, there are times when things are not normal and there are pregnancy complications. Although pregnancy complications can be serious and sometimes life threatening, the good news is that they are rare.

In any case it will be wise to be aware of potential or real pregnancy complications.

Listed below is a list of some general Pregnancy Complications

  • Problems with the Placenta

    • Placenta Previa: this is when placenta completely or partially covers the cervix.
      • It can manifest as bleeding late in a pregnancy
      • It is diagnosed in a routine ultrasound and is managed with a schedule Cesarean Section prior to the onset of labor

    • Complications During Twin Pregnancies. In twin pregnancies, the common and preferred situation is to have two placentas. Sometimes this is not the case and the two fetuses share one placenta.

Most problems that occur with twin pregnancies are where there is 1 placenta. Some of the main reasons for these problems are:

      • Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome TTTS - amount of fluid around the babies - only happens when there is a shared placenta
      • Placenta may not be shared equally between the 2 fetuses
      • Unequal sharing may pose a problem on how they grow - one may grow more than the other
      • Also affects how much fluid is around each baby which indicates how much nutrition and oxygen each baby is getting.
      • If a baby is getting less oxygen and food than it needs, the body tends to preserve the most important organs – the brain and the heart – and neglects the others
      • TRAP - when one twin does not have all the parts that it should (e.g., no head but a heart), the healthy baby is supporting the partially formed twin

  • Amniotic Fluid

is an important indicator of pregnancy complications because of either:
    • Not enough fluid around fetus
    • Too much fluid around fetus

  • Bacterial infection

to the Amniotic Sac. Symptoms include
    • fever in labor
    • vaginal leaking of amniotic fluid

        Treatment

    • antibiotics to the mother and
    • medication to the child when born

  • Preeclampsia -

leading cause of premature birth. It is a Danger to mother and baby. It is characterized by sudden onset of high blood pressure and protein in the urine and swelling.

Preeclampsia can be life threatening to the mom and requires immediate delivery of the baby.

  • Gestational diabetes.

This is increased levels of blood sugar because the mothers body is unable to produce sufficient levels of insulin to the increased demand of pregnancy.

Generally, Gestational diabetes could be controlled with diet, exercise and blood sugar monitoring. If left untreated, the baby can grow too large and cause delivery difficulties.

Always consult with your physician with any and all concerns.
