Pelvic Inflammatory Disease - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is the general name given to infection of the female reproductive system. The female reproductive system consisting of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus and vagina are susceptible to bacterial infections. This could be because of poor hygiene or sexually transmitted diseases (SIDs). Bacteria multiplies in the warm environment of the vagina causing inflamation, pain and vaginal discharge. Left untreated, bacterial and viral infection could spread throughout the female reproductive system and then to other organs. One of the worst cases of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is when a woman ovulates and as the egg is moving down the fallopian tube, it is blocked by scar tissue caused by the PID infection. If the sperm somehow manages to navigate through or around this blockage and fertilizes the egg then you have an ectopic pregnancy - pregnancy in the fallopian tubes. This can result in very serious consequences as the fertilized egg cannot pass to get into the uterus.
