What Is a Pap Smear A pap smear is a screening test to determine or test for cancerous cells or pre-cancerous cells or other atypical cells in the area. There are some confusion about if or when you should get a pap smear. The old guidelines about how often or when to do it has been updated. Does the new guidelines concerning Pap smear suggest that less is more? Well, you owe it to yourself to know about all the new developments that are taking place. Occasionally, there are some abnormal pap smears. An Abnormal pap smear is when there are atypical cells or abnormal cells in the area. This does not necessarily mean that you have cancer. Although that is one possibly, there are other possibilities. It could mean that you have a bad yeast infection or inflamation in the vagina. However, once abnormal cells are detected, further tests are undertaken to determine what the cause or condition is that caused it. Cervical cancer is a possibility but it is not the only one.
