Ovarian Cysts - Causes, Types, Symptoms and Treatment

Ovarian Cysts - What Are They?

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled bag that resembles blisters that occurs in and on the ovaries. This occurrence is most prevalent in a female’s reproductive years. Most, however, go away naturally and without a problem. The problem is with those that linger.

Cause of Ovarian Cysts - How Do You Get Ovarian Cysts

Each month, normally functioning ovaries emit an egg. This process is called ovulation. During this time, as the egg matures, a cyst-like structure is formed inside the ovary.

This cyst-like structure ruptures to release the egg. The empty cyst-like structure now forms the corpus leteun. The corpus leteun then dissolves if pregnancy does not occur.

This process sometimes goes awry and the corpus leteun fails to dissolve resulting in an ovarian cyst. This type of cyst is known as a functional cyst and is the most common.

However, there are other ovarian cysts, some of which are caused by a hormonal imbalance of estrogen and progesterone.

Types of Ovarian Cysts

Besides Functional ovarian cysts that is mentioned above, there are also Dermoid,Cystadenoma, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrone (PCOS) and Endometrioma Cysts.

Characteristic of the Types of Ovarian Cysts

  • Functional ovarian cysts is the most common but least problematic and usually disappears on its own
  • Dermoid Cysts are usually filled with various types of tissues like hair and skin
  • Endometrioma Cysts have tissues similar to the lining of the uterus and it attaches to the ovaries.
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrone (PCOS) is the usual connection between ovarian cyst and pregnancy. PCOS is characterized by a lack of consistent ovulation.

This is because the ovaries are enlarged and create a thick outer covering which many prevent ovulation. This often results in infertility problems

  • Cystadenoma Cysts develop on the outer surface of the ovaries

Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts

Sometimes there are no symptoms. However, when symptoms do occur, they are usually accompanied with pain.

Rupturing Ovarian Cysts and Twisted Ovarian Cyst

The pain could be because of the rupturing, the twisting, or the bleeding of a cyst that irritates the abdominal tissues.

Instances of pain include:

  • Pain to the abdomen and during sexual intercourse
  • Irregular and painful periods
  • Sudden abdominal and pelvic pain
  • Pain and vomiting
  • Sudden weakness and faintness

Treatment

Surgery to remove the cyst is the main course of action
