Colon cancer symptoms, risk factors, causes, and treatment

Colorectal and Colon cancer symptoms

Early recognition of colon cancer symptoms is crucial in the successfull treatment of and recovery from colon cancer.

The colon and rectum are part of the large intestine and, as such, cancers of the colon and rectum are sometimes referred to together as "colorectal cancer".

Colorectal cancer is a major leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States (it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths) and it ranks close to breast and lung cancer in number of occurrence- with more than 130,000 cases each year, and over 50,000 deaths.

In most cases, however, colorectal cancer is totally treatable if caught early.

As with most cancers, early recognition of colorectal or colon cancer symptoms is crucial for successful treatment because the earlier colorectal cancer is discovered, greater are the chances of successful treatment and recovery.

Unfortunately, in most cases, colorectal or colon cancer symptoms are not visible and often by the time colorectal or colon cancer symptoms become visible, there usually is the presence of colorectal cancer.

The good news, however, is that there are tests (colonoscopy) which may reveal colorectal or colon cancer symptoms early.

Colorectal or colon cancer symptoms include:

  • Polyps of the Colon and Rectum: a mass of tissue in the bowel wall.

Most polyps are benign at the start with the most commonly reported symptom being rectal bleeding on defecation.

However, not all polyps bleed, and those that do, may not bleed all the time.

  • Other colorectal or colon cancer symptoms include changes in bowel patterns, excessive gas, bloating, and cramping.
  • Pain is not usually likely until advanced stages of the disease when polyps become large.

At this stage cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhea may occasionally be experienced.

  • Intestinal obstruction
  • Weight loss with no known reason
  • Stools narrower than usual

What is Colorectal cancer?

Colorectal cancer is a cancerous tumor of the large intestine which includes the colon and the rectum (large bowel).

Most colorectal cancers originate as benign polyp tumors in the rectum or lower colon and over time degenerate into malignant tumors.

Cancerous tumors of the large bowel usually occur after the age of 50.

They are slightly more frequent in women than in men and are almost as common as lung cancer in the United States.

The tumor spreads by direct extension through the bowel wall and by lymph node metastasises. The liver and lungs are common sites of distant metastasises.

Risks factors: What are the causes of colorectal cancer. How do you get it?

Although no definitive risks factors of colorectal cancer have been identified, certain observations have been made.

It has been observed that in Japan and rural Africa, occurrence of colorectal cancer are low, whereas the United States and other developed Western countries have very high rates of colorectal cancer.

This suggests the following:

Risk factors for colorectal cancer include:

  • Dietary factors: a diet high in carbohydrates and beef and low in roughage (a high-fat, low-fiber diet) may be a contributing cause of colorectal cancer.

  • Polyps of the colon: even though they are benign at the beginning, tend to degenerate and become malignant later.
  • Exposure to asbestos fibers and high levels of radiation.
  • Breast cancer patients.
  • Family history

Traditional treatment for colorectal and colon cancer

  • Surgery: treatment of colon cancer may involve removing the tumor, the surrounding colon, and the attached tissues.

  • Tumors of the lower two-thirds of the rectum usually require removing the entire rectum.
  • Radiation and Chemotherapy treatments.

Early detection is the most effective measure in the fight against colorectal or colon cancer, next to prevention.

With proper screening, colon cancer symptoms should be detected before the development of colorectal or colon cancer when it is most curable.

Prevention and recommendation

It is strongly recommended that proper screening for colorectal and colon cancer symptoms be done regularly because early recognition of colorectal and colon cancer symptoms is crucial for successful treatment and recovery.

However, if at all possible, Prevention is by far the preferred option.

In the table below are special recommendations.

Nutrient / Supplement

Helpful Notes

Carotenoids Very important for rebuilding and repair of body cells, critical for cancer patients.

Generally, a carotenoid mixture combined with a complete multi-vitamin with good mineral content will produce good results.

Chemotherapy patients using combinations of everything listed on this table will improve their recovery rate, grow back hair sooner, and feel better.

Fatty Acids Extremely important for reducing cancerous tumors.

Helps strengthen the body's immune system, which is weakened by cancer.

Fatty acids are found in omega fatty acids from fish oil, flax seed oil, and borage seed oil.

Multi-vitamin Contains Vitamin E, Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Magnesium, Manganese, Selenium, and Zinc which all are helpful in both the treatment and prevention of cancer.
Garlic Garlic has been shown to inhibit the formation of free radicals, a benefit for those with cancer.

Garlic also helps boost the immune system. A combination herbal immune system remedy often includes garlic.

Reishi Reishi mushroom serves to boost the immune system weakened by cancer and is also anti-tumor.

Normally found in a combination herbal immune system mixture.

Bioflavonoids Bioflavonoids are anti-cancer agents that promote the production of natural interferon in the body
Carnitine Protects against damage from free radicals and toxins associated with cancer.

Some omega mixtures contain carnitine.

Taurine

Serves as foundation for tissue and organ repair.

Grape Seed Extract Powerful anti-oxidant

The fight against colorectal or colon cancer not only entails the early recognition of colorectal or colon cancer symptoms, it also requires food and lifestyle changes as well.
